Knapsack Pass-Sep 22, 2010

There is never a shortage of awe-inspiring, accessible destinations to quench your thirst for nature and seclusion.

My brother and sister-in-law were in town, and I was looking for something to dazzle them without dragging them…up 5000 feet of vertical.  It was a lovely day, but I knew low level moisture was on its way, so I opted for the Mowich area (NW entrance) of Mt Rainier National Park.  I knew the on-shore flow would create a sea of clouds interspersed with blue sky as Big Tahoma flexed his muscles at the incoming moisture.

We took the hidden path on the SE side of Mowich Lake and quickly hiked up to the basin below Knapsack Pass.  It wasn’t long before realities of an average day evaporated into a dreamscape laced with wildflowers, fall colors, and jaw-dropping views of an immense volcano.
